Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Marcela Suez has a diverse career in music, acting, contemporary dance, ballet and flamenco in Argentina, Spain and Brazil. She teaches Dance at the Universidad de Buenos Aires's Centro Cultural Ricardo Rojas. Marcela runs her own theatre in Buenos Aires and uses that space to further the art of flamenco. She has performed in festivals, clubs and concerts in Spain, Brazil and Argentina as well as performed on major Spanish television programs.
She began studying music and dance at the Collegium Musicum at the age of four. She also specialized in piano, studying with Violeta H. de Gainza.
She studied contemporary dance and choreography with Patricia Stokoe, Margarita Bali, Renate Schotelius, Ana María Stekelman and Ana Itelman, She studied ballet with Alfredo Gurkel. She trained in acting with Carlos Gandolfo, Ricardo Bartís and Laura Yusem.
After performing for five years in major theaters in Buenos Aires (Cervantes, Pdte. Alvear, Payró and others) with choreographer Patricia Stokoe’s company Aluminé and with Teresa Duggan’s Duggan Dance, she becomes involved in flamenco. In Buenos Aires, she studied with Dolores Monterrey, and then with masters Jorge Luis, Conchita España and Carlos Vilán.
Later, she was invited to dance in the “50 Years of Coca Cola in Sciences and Arts” celebration, and to participate in the “Tribute to Cante Jondo” show, organized by the Spanish Embassy where she worked with guitarist Manolo Yglesias and singer Rafael de Triana.
In Spain she perfected her technique at the Amor de Dios Academy where she studied with Ciro, La Tati, Carmen Cortez, El Güito, Manolete and Antonio Canales.
Upon returning to Argentina, she dances with the flamenco group Los Tarantos in several opportunities. After that experience, she is invited to join the Ballet Español del Teatro Avenida by the director and choreographer of that company, Carlos Vilán. She tours Argentina with the company.
She is invited to participate in “Tribute to Buenos Aires”, a performance directed by the Spanish dancer Antonio Ortega (Teatro Margarita Xirgu), as well as in concerts by Isabel Pantoja.
She performs at various events including Feria del Libro, Arte BA, Expo Gourmet, Tren de la Costa, etc. and at venues around Buenos Aires including Ávila, Club Español, Morocco, Gitana, Parakultural, Club del Vino, Clásica y Moderna. She has also performed on major television programs.
She travels to Spain regularly to perfect her technique with renowned artists such as La China, Juana Amaya, Belén Maya, Rafaela Carrasco, Eva La Yerbabuena, Farruquito, Manuela Ríos and Hiniesta Cortés (dancers from the Cristina Hoyos company).
In Buenos Aires, she participates in “Doña Rosita la soltera”, a Teatro Municipal General San Martín production, directed by Rafael Fernández.
Later, she forms a part of the Arte Flamenco group. With that company, she performs in the shows such as “Luna Gitana”, “Flamenco Puro”, “Flamencos”, “Sentir Flamenco”, “Del Sur Flamenco” and “Cante Jondo”. Performances are held at venues such as Fundación Banco Patricios, Auditorio Bauen and theater spaces including Recoleta, Ricardo Rojas and Jorge Luis Borges.
In 2004, she opens the show “Sur Flamenco” at the Centro Cultural Borges. The show later travels in San Pablo, Brazil.
She gives classes in dance at the Universidad de Buenos Aires's Centro Cultural Ricardo Rojas, as well as private lessons.
She is currently rehearsing a show entitled “Poema del Cante Jondo” based on texts by F. García Lorca. She both choreographs and dances in the show, which is directed by Rafael Fernández.. She also runs her own theater in the Abasto section of Buenos Aires. The space is used for shows that further the art of flamenco.
