SHANNON MORENO was born in Vancouver and studied ballet with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet Professional School and the Rudra Bejart Ballet in Switzerland. Upon graduation, Shannon worked with the Gothenberg Opera Ballet in Sweden and the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Germany, offering opportunities to work closely with several international choreographers, such as Christopher Bruce, Mats Ek, Richard Wherlock, Maurice Bejart, Youri Vamos and Robert North. Now based in Canada, Shannon is a member of the LINK Dance Company, Wen Wei Dance and is an instructor at Simon Fraser University. She is a vital contributor to dance in British Columbia as a performer, choreographer, adjudicator and educator.
FARLEY JOHANSSON studied Classical and Contemporary Ballet, and Modern Dance at the New Zealand School of Dance. Farley is a dancer and creator now residing in Vancouver, working as an independent performer, teacher, and choreographer. He has worked with such companies as; Kinesis Dance, LINK Dance, Wen Wei Dance, The Holy Body Tattoo and the Royal New Zealand Ballet, performing in Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Venezuela and Columbia.
Most recently, Shannon and Farley are the co-creators and co-directors of their own dance company. Science Friction Productions is a Vancouver-based, interdisciplinary dance company, created in October 2003.
JOJO ZOLINA is known as a spirited and extraordinarily eclectic freestyler and choreographer, Jojo is greatly respected in Vancouver's dance community not only for his eye-popping dancing ability, but also for the love and passion that he puts into every performance he does or class he teaches. Jojo keeps audience members of all ages mesmerized as he dances straight from his heart and soul and melds an exciting and diverse fusion of dance styles with the unique spiritual and tribal edge he adds to his freestyle.
Jojo's extensive dance career has allowed him to express his creativity through a great variety of genres of dance ranging from traditional ethnic dance and folk dance, to house, reggaeton, break dance, street jazz, hip hop, dancehall, tribal and salsa, to name but a few.
Jojo began his dance career shortly after moving from the Philippines to Canada and has since become an inspiration to the people who have learned from him or watched his shows. Jojo has performed on stage with many talented music artists including Nelly Furtado, Moka Only, K-Os and The Roots. He has also had the opportunity to perform on several TV shows in Canada and Asia and is currently co-producing an 'Over The Influence Street Dance Sessions' video.
MONICA PROENCA was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She started her dance studies in her early teens. After attending the San Francisco School of the Arts she returned to Brazil to begin her professional career. Monica has worked in many Brazilian and American dance companies of varying styles and has been acclaimed as “fabulously gutsy” by Louis Segal (Los Angeles Times). Operas and Ballets such as Orpheus and Eurydice, Jesus Christ Superstar, Giselle and Swan Lake are part of her extensive resume. She has also worked on many independent projects with world renowned choreographers such as, Gisele Santoro(Brazil), Kevin Iega Jeff(U.S.A), Carlos Vilan(Spain) , Vera Timachova (Russia) and John Ottman (Canada) .
Monica is a dancer, teacher and choreographer in Ballet, Modern (Lester Horton technique) and Jazz, uniquely combined with her own Brazilian flair. She has conducted her career in Brazil, the United States and Canada with passion, strength and elegant technique.
HISTORY OF SCIENCE FRICTION PRODUCTIONS
SFP was founded by, Shannon Moreno and Farley Johansson, in October 2003, out of a growing need for a creative outlet. They had a strong desire to develop as creators and acknowledged the aspiration to form a company. SFP’s mandate is dedicated to the creation, production and presentation of contemporary dance theatre. SFP is committed to developing work of a high caliber that is accessible, theatrical and entertaining which will increase the community’s awareness of dance. SFP intends to develop and foster creative collaborative artistic relationships and seek to strengthen a place for dance in Vancouver’s cultural landscape.
SFP has created over ten pieces of work over the last three years. These pieces have ranged from outdoor site-specific work, to small stages and informal showings to full theatre presentations. SFP has much to offer the community in the way of workshops, projects and performances. SFP has initiated youth improvisational workshops that incorporated movement, music, voice and composition. SFP has been presenting a performance series called PRESS PLAY. PRESS PLAY was established in 2001, as an annual performance series that would assist choreographers to further their creativity, development and exposure within the Vancouver dance community. The vision is to provide guidance, support and experience for dance theatre creators in a professional performance venue. PRESS PLAY has presented over 30 created works and features dance, live music and multi-media. |
